    Why Does Down Syndrome Happen?

Humans have 46 chromosomes. In Down Syndrome, there’s a little change — an extra copy of chromosome 21. This leads to 47 chromosomes instead of 46.

    • Trisomy 21 (94%) – Every cell has 3 copies of chromosome 21.
    • Translocation (4%) – Part of chromosome 21 attaches to another chromosome.
    • Mosaicism (2%) – Only some cells have the extra chromosome.

    How Common Is It?

Down Syndrome occurs in approximately 1 in every 700 births. The risk increases with maternal age:

    • Age 20: Very low risk
    • Age 35+: Higher risk
    • Age 45+: Highest risk

    Health Checks After Birth

All babies with Down Syndrome should receive special check-ups including:

    • Heart scan – to check for heart defects (about 50% have one)
    • Hearing test – since hearing loss is common
    • Eye check – for vision issues like cataracts
    • Thyroid test – for hormone balance
    • Blood test – to detect blood-related issues
