What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition that influences communication, behaviour, and social understanding. The word “spectrum” highlights the wide variation in skills and challenges — from highly verbal individuals to those who require structured support.

Earlier, autism was described using different categories such as Asperger’s Syndrome, PDD-NOS, or Classic Autism. Now, all fall under the unified term “ASD”, allowing for a more personalized and inclusive approach to therapy and care.

Early Signs & Symptoms in Children

Early identification can significantly enhance a child’s growth and communication outcomes. Watch for these signs during your child’s first years of development:

Social & Communication

  • Limited eye contact or no response to name
  • Difficulty understanding or expressing needs
  • Unusual tone, pitch, or rhythm while speaking
  • Prefers solitary play or struggles with peer interaction

Behavioural Patterns

  • Repetitive actions like flapping, spinning, or lining up toys
  • Rigid routines or distress over small changes
  • Over- or under-sensitivity to lights, sounds, or textures
  • Difficulty managing emotions or transitions

Other Developmental Challenges

  • Sleep or feeding irregularities
  • Uneven learning patterns or skill delays
  • Co-occurring concerns like anxiety or ADHD
